Sometimes, it’s really quiet here on the blog. But that does not mean that my life is quiet! On the contrary. Whenever the blog is resting, life is kind of crazy. I always try to capture these crazy, wonderful, funny daily bits and pieces with my phone. And I often post them on Instagram! It’s such an easy way to create, remember and share memories.
But Instagram is not only a great way to share memories and practise your photography skills. I always find loads of inspiration, get behind-the-scenes looks from my favorite bloggers or learn first-hand about new product releases from small brands. But most importantly I’m meeting many like-minded people – who might even become real friends if I’ll ever meet them in real life!
What hasn’t really happened (yet) is that I connect with old, real-life friends on Instagram.
Which leads me to a cultural difference between my American and my German friends: While my American friends are really active, not always on Instagram, but on Facebook, for example, and allow you to participate in their personal life, my friends from Germany are way more secretive. Some of them are not on Facebook. Others have a Facebook account, but only post once a year when they say „thank you“ for all the birthday wishes that had been posted to their timeline (I’m always wondering: what do they do with their account for the rest of the year???). And only a handful post, comment and share on a regular basis. On Instagram, I only have three German friends that I also know in real life (hey Sarah, Rina and Tati!). So today, I would like to invite you to join me on Instagram. Awake your creative side, put those pictures on your phone to use, and help Germany to take the first step out of the Social Media Stone Age (am I exaggerating here? Not sure!).

I would say I don’t count as a German friend, my facebook & instagram behavior is truly American. When I talk to friends in Germany and they feel like they par take my life through all my postings & photos. Just sad that I don’t see much about their daily adventures.
I agree! You have become a real American, Rina! Will be interesting to see how our social media behavior changes once we go back to Germany…

Du sprichst mir aus der Seele.
Mir geht es ähnlich. Viele meiner Freunde (Deutsche) haben keinen Facebookaccount und wenn sie einen haben, dann sind sie eigentlich nicht aktiv. Umso erstaunter bin ich, dass mein Vater (89J) einen Facebookaccount hat und zumindest Beiträge liest und ab und an auch kommentiert. In Deutschland ist gerade bei den etwas älteren (nicht böse sein) eine große Angst des Abhörens. Dagegen kommentieren aus Italien, Frankreich und Argentinien und Australien die Leute ganz locker ohne große Hemmungen. Das scheint also tatsächlich nicht nur am Alter ;-), sondern ach am Land zu liegen.

Liebe Sylke, Dein Papa ist ja richtig cool! Meine Eltern haben es bis jetzt noch nicht zu Facebook geschafft. Aber meine Mama benutzt wenigstens Pinterest. Sie is nämlich eine richtig gute Näherin.
Die Nutzung von Social Media scheint wirklich kulturell sehr unterschiedlich zu sein. Ich frage mich aber immer, wovor die Deutschen eigentlich Angst haben. Man ist doch selber dafür verantwortlich, was man im Internet von sich gibt. Da ist es doch klar, dass man kurz nachdenkt, bevor man „publish“ drückt. Vielleicht habe ich bislang aber auch einfach noch keine schlechten Erfahrungen gemacht und gehe deshalb etwas lockerer damit um…. Ich schicke Dir liebe Grüße und ein ein paar Sonnenstrahlen! Tina

ich denke, dass es auch daran liegt, dass die Deutschen generell ängstlicher sind. Das hängt mit vielen Dingen zusammen. Für *den Deutschen* ist es ja auch noch üblich einen Job zu haben und darin bis zur Rente zu bleiben. Und dann fallen viele in ein tiefes Loch. Ortswechsel, Jobwechsel, vielleicht sogar mehrere ist bei uns NOCH nicht so üblich. Doch bei den Jüngeren geht es so langsam los. Um bei dem Beispiel von meinem Vater :-) zu bleiben. Er hat sein Leben lang eine Sekretärin gehabt und nichts selber geschrieben. Als er in Rente ging hat er dann bei der Volkshochschule begonnen zu arbeiten. Das macht er heute noch. So kommt er natürlich mit vielen jungen Leuten zusammen. Mit 80 bekam er dann seinen ersten Lap. Und nun hat er auch sein erstes Smartphone, hihi. Ich finde es super, auch wenn mein Bruder und ich nun häufiger Anfragen von ihm bekommen. Doch ich denke, dass man nur so auch flexibel im Kopf bleibt.
Pinterest ist doch aber auch klasse. Daran sieht man doch, dass sobald Interessen da sind, die entsprechenden Plattformen auch genutzt werden. Mein Vater kam zu Facebook als unser Sohn länger in Spanien war. So kann man dann natürlich besser kommunizieren.
